How to Plan Your Wedding Sound: A Southern California Guide
Ceremony mics, speeches, and a dance floor that works. What to ask your venue, DJ, and sound company before your wedding day.
Sound is one of the few wedding details every guest experiences from start to finish. It carries your vows and your toasts, and it sets the energy of the dance floor. Here’s how to plan it well.
1. Treat the ceremony and the reception separately
Most weddings need two different systems:
- Ceremony: small, discreet speakers and reliable microphones for the officiant, vows, and readings. Outdoor ceremonies need more coverage than you’d expect because wind and open space swallow sound.
- Reception: full-range speakers and subwoofers for dinner, speeches, and dancing.
If your ceremony and reception are in different spots, ask whether the sound company will run two systems or move one between them during cocktail hour.
2. Ask your venue about sound limits and power
Many Southern California venues, especially estates, vineyards, and residential areas, have volume limits or curfews. Some outdoor sites have no power at all. Before you book a sound system, ask your venue:
- Is there a decibel limit or a hard music curfew?
- Where are the power outlets, and on how many circuits?
- Are there load-in restrictions or time windows?
A better system can actually help with volume limits. Clean, well-placed speakers sound full at lower levels than cheap speakers pushed to distortion.
3. Plan the speeches
Toasts are where most wedding audio goes wrong. Make sure you have:
- At least one reliable handheld microphone, with a backup
- A system that reaches every table, including the back of the room
- Someone watching levels during speeches
4. Coordinate your DJ and your sound company
Your DJ may bring their own speakers, or they may prefer to play through a higher-end rental system. Ask what equipment they use (such as CDJ-3000s or a controller) and whether they need booth monitors. Get your DJ and sound company talking a week or two before the event.
